Stay Slim Secrets

If you want to maintain your weight, the formula is simple: burn as many calories as you consume. Try these simple tricks to help you manage:

  • Divide to conquer. Always aim to fill half of your plate with a colourful mix of veggies, a quarter with protein and another quarter with a whole-grain carbohydrate.
  • Downsize your dishes. Bigger plates mean more food. Serve meals on salad plates instead.
  • Dining out? You don’t have to eat your whole meal. Take your leftovers home. Better yet: Order a starter as your main course.

Treat Your Tastebuds

We all have foods that can make us feel happy. Go on, treat yourself…occasionally! You are more likely to stick to your long-term goal if you enjoy what you eat.

Aim for Five a Day

Fruit and vegetables are central to a healthy balanced diet. They tend to be low in fat and contain fewer calories gram for gram. Aim for at least five portions a day to reap the benefits. Fruits and veggies make a great snack. Stash an apple or some baby carrots in your purse. Add vegetables to stews and casseroles to create delicious, lower calorie versions of some of your favorite dishes. You’ll gain additional vitamins and minerals, too.

Don’t forget Dairy Foods

Make sure to include at least 3 servings of low-fat dairy products a day as part of healthy balanced diet. Foods like milk, yoghurt and cheese provide protein and calcium, important for maintaining good health, especially healthy bones and teeth. A serving could be a small pot of low-fat yoghurt or fromage frais, a small serving of cheese, or a 200ml glass of skimmed milk.

Try these Four Tricks

  • Plan your meals in line with principles of a healthy diet for the week in advance. Then, make a shopping list and only buy foods for these meals.
  • Choose these options when you eat out, like thin crust pizzas, grilled meat or fish dishes and tomato-based pasta dishes.
  • Avoid filling up on pre-meal nibbles. They sometimes provide more calories that are easy to forget.
  • Before leaving the house, pack snacks like fruit, nuts or crackers.

Break for Breakfast

Skipping meals might seem like a good way to cut calories, but studies show that those who eat breakfast maintain a healthier body weight than those who don’t. In fact, missing out on breakfast can mean missing out on important nutrients that are difficult to make up during the rest of the day. A breakfast cereal made with whole grain, with skimmed milk and topped with fruit will provide your body with a good kickstart to the day.
